Carte blanche was founded in 2007 as Carte blanche Film GmbH by the producer and director Stephan Wagner and the producer Andreas Born. The company is located on the premises of Studios Babelsberg in Potsdam. Carte blanche Film is specialized in producing German-language films and TV productions. In addition, Carte blanche serves as a consulting and service production company in Germany. Since 2014 Stephan Wagner has been the sole shareholder and managing director.  Since 2015 Carte blanche has a branch in Cologne.

 
In 2008HOFFNUNG FÜR KUMMEROW (Hope for Kummerow) directed by Jan Ruzicka was the first film produced by Carte blanche as a service production for Saxonia Media on behalf of ARD.

In 2011, Carte blanche produced the film noir thriller LÖSEGELD (Ransom) for WDR . Ulrike C. Tscharre and Mišel Matičević were nominated for the German Television Award in 2012 for their acting performances.

In 2012, Carte blanche produced TATORT – GEGEN DEN KOPF (Crime scene - In the Head) for RBB . On the website www.tatort-fundus.de fans can see that it is one of the best “Tatort” (Crime Scene) shows of all time.

In 2013, Carte blanche co-produced a short film together with Studio Babelsberg and the Bavarian Broadcasting Company, promoted by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg: BUSINESS AS USUAL – DER PROPHET FLIEGT MIT celebrated its premiere in the competition Max Ophüls Award 2014. The winner of the Berlin Kurzfilmrolle received the Amnesty International Human Rights Award in 2014.
 

In 2014, Carte blanche co-produced the feature film OHNE DICH (Without you) with Katja Riemann and Charly Hübner directed by Alexandre Powelz.  The movie received the Ourense Independent Film Festival Audience Award as well as the Award for Best Screenplay in 2014. 2016 Alexandre Powelz was awarded the Barcelona International Film Festival's El Rey Award for Excellence in Film Direction.

 

Also in 2014 Carte blanche produced the Degeto TV movie HARTER BROCKEN (Tough Nut) as a service production for H&V Entertainment in Munich. The record ratings of 7.5 million viewers (24.3%) made it the most successful ARD TV film in 2015.

In 2015, TATORT DORTMUND: HUNDSTAGE (Crime Scene: Dog days) was produced for WDR as well as WER AUFGIBT IST TOT (You Give up, You Die) which led to a German Television Award for Katharina Marie Schubert in 2017 the 14th Quotenmeter TV Film Award for Bjarne Mädel.

 
In 2016, the TV film AM RUDER (At the helm) for ZDF with Wotan Wilke-Möhring and Julia Koschitz topped off the year’s productions. In 2018 Julia Koschitz was nominated for the Romy Award in Vienna.

In 2018, the ARD/Degeto TV film ZWISCHEN ZWEI HERZEN (Between Two Hearts) was produced with Anna Schudt, Felix Klare and Mark Waschke in the leading roles. In 2019 Anna Schudt was nominated for the Hessian Film Award for this role.

Ever since it was founded in 2015 by the producer and film rights agent Alexander van Dülmen and the director Stephan Wagner until 2021, Carte blanche Film GmbH was a shareholder of Carte blanche Film International GmbH which was also located in Potsdam-Babelsberg.

 

In 2019, Carte blanche International produced the TV event DIE GETRIEBENEN (MERKEL - Anatomy of a crisis), based on the bestseller  by the WELT  journalist Robin Alexander. In 2020 Alexander van Dülmen and Stephan Wagner won the German Television Academy Award for the best production. In 2021 Tristan Seith received the German Acting Award for his performance of the politician Peter Altmaier.

 

The feature film A WET DOG was co-produced together with Warner Bros., based on the book and directed by Damir Lukačević with Doguhan Kabadayi, Kida Kodr Ramadan and Mohammad Eliraqui in the leading roles. The film was rated "very valuable" by the film rating agency. Mohammad Eliraqui was nominated in the category Newcomer for the German Acting Award.

In 2022, Carte blanche was extended by Carte blanche Media GmbH.
